I have a proof coin that has multiple small die chips on the reverse and die cracks on both the obverse and reverse. Are these items considered typical in proof coins or valuable rarities? I'm debating on whether to pay for it to be evaluated professionally. Thanks!
The "S" has something hanging, the other "S" has a tiny line going up, the "F" looks split at the bottom, etc. Another proof coin in the set is still covered in grease and appears to be missing half of the rim marks. (Sorry if my terms aren't correct.) Any thoughts on that one as well? I wasn't sure if these things were common or worth having a professional look at. I tried to get a pic of the line going through the hair, but I can't see it now that the cover is back on. (The cover fell off yesterday, so I used the opportunity to look at it closer.)
It's difficult to tell from the photos, but the mark on the bottom of the "S" looks like it might be a die gouge. The vertical line from the top of the "S" looks like it may be a scratch. Can you tell if it is raised or recessed? If it is recessed, it's a scratch. If it is raised, I don't think it is a crack. It may be another die gouge. I can't see anything on the bottom of the "F". It was mentioned in another thread, and the "greasy" appearance is probably a bluish haze that afflicts many proof coins which results from improper storage in less-than-ideal climate conditions. Another pic posted. I can't tell on the first "S" in STATES..I didn't even notice it until the case was opened. The 2nd "S" in STATES and the "F" in OF appear to be bubbled up. It's harder to take pics of proofs than it is circulated coins! They are so bright. Edited: After looking at it further, I can't figure out the "F" and whether it's bubbled up or PMD. (I was not the first owner.) The "S" one looks like it has a miniature "3" underneath. The "E" has a mark going off of it, but that is more subtle.
