Hello I was thinking about picking up a smooth edge dollar, and was wondering what you guys thought of the future price of this coin would be in the future years? I know when they first came out the were going for hundreds. Now they look like the settled in a price range and stayed there. What do you think? I realy hate to buy one of these but as a future investment like 20+ years i think i would miss the boat this coin.
I assume you are talking about the "Godless" Presidential Dollar coins, not the Sac Dollar (which has plain edges). Who knows what the future price will be. That will be determined by supply and demand. These coins were priced quite high when they were first discovered because 1) the demand was high and 2) the supply was low. As more and more Godless Dollars were discovered (increased supply) and collector interest waned (decreased demand) the price dropped. My guess is the supply will not increase significantly as most of the Godless Dollars have been discovered. And I also suspect collector interest will not increase significantly as new errors captivate many collectors. So I think the price should remain somewhat steady. But I could be completely wrong. My advice is to buy the coin if it appeals to you as a collector. If you are strictly looking for a good investment I would not recommend this (or any) coin as it is very hard for a collector to make a profit on a coin.
Yes your are correct I was talking about the new dollar and not the sac. If this coin becomes a coin to have to complete a collection like the 41 over 42 merc then i will be screwed. And would kick myself. So I think I will buy it along with the 1964 Kennedy accented hair.
Well, with a little bit of knowledge about the godless dollars I can tell you what Hobo has stated above is correct. I watched the first wave sell for crazy numbers on ebay when they were released. There are a ton of the washingtons out there, the Adams are tougher because of the lower find rate on them. In the Adams series I can tell you that the double edge were being found at a rate of about 20-1 over the Godless. I would guess there are ~2500 of the Adams Godless based on what I know and who I have talked to. approx. 50,000 of the double edge. Last Adams Godless in MS65 NGC were selling in the $450.00 range. The Washingtons should be able to be found in the $50-$75 range. The Jefferson Godless are a whole different story, expect to pay a huge premium if you can locate one of them.
