Banknotes which combine my love of fine art, and the painter that painted them are a high order, this 20.000 Lire from 1975 is a remarkable then rather high denomination note that never circulated very long. It is now a very high priced collectible. The painter Titian, otherwise known as Tiziano in Italian, lived from ca. 1485-1576 and is remarkable for his paintings of realistic subject, with dramatic colours. This particular work is now known as Sacred And Profane Love, and was painted ca. 1516. This work is exhibited in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, one of the Gallery's more popular attractions.
That's a nice painting but I don't see anything profane about it. I don't see any profanity. No blasphemy. Maybe having the baby there with the man almost naked is profane. I don't know.
Very nice looking note. You mention that they are quite rare today. What is a nicer example worth (I know nothing of Italian notes).
nice note! if only notes of today carried such works of art.. it might incite a currency collector revolution lol
Well the biggest hassle I have ever dealt with an auction house that invoiced me 5 times, each time a different amount, and took over a month to wait for, dozens of emails, phone calls etc. And to buy it, I had to buy not one, but two of them - the two were different years, but same crisp uncirculated grade. That is how bad I wanted this note.:smile
http://finearttouch.com/Sacred_and_...Differences_Between_Titian_and_Giorgione.html Above is a website showing the painting and explaining the scene. No that is not a man on the right... It is a beautiful painting! I can see why Scottishmoney endured until the note arrived. Congratulations! jeankay
I would be interested in knowing where these notes trend...maybe not how much you paid for it, but just an idea of what even a circulated example would run. If you don't mind me asking.
A moderately circulated example goes for €170-200 or $272 - $320. The Uncs usually go for about €450 +
