What does it mean when it just says "Private" where someone's feedback score should be on ebay?

Nevermind. I just read what it means on ebay. I guess anyone can set it their to private.

What it tends to really mean is that they have a lot of bad feedback that they don't want people to see.

Or they just wish to stay private. Some people like to keep their privacy and there's nothing wrong with that.

Or (since feedback links the auctions) they're buying something that they don't want anyone to know about or how much they paid for it.

And I sure wouldn't want my wife checking out my feedback and finding out what I was buying!

Haha, I have nothing to hide from my wife. She can check if she wants but she see's what I get in the mail and has the same access to all of our banking/financial accounts. The best policy is the honesty policy when it comes to being married. :thumb:

Oh and when the wife does ask me the "So, how much did that one cost?" and I tell her, if she gives me the stink eye I simply compare it to one of her luxuries she spends on I never question, like her yoga classes, hair stylist costs and or the amount she spends on massages/pedicures, etc. Just a friendly reminder to her to not give me the stink eye, it's just okay to ask how much. ;)

Way back, even some of the good guys would go private while they fought off an attack of negs till ebay could sort it all out. Not sure if that's the case any longer.

I believe it might be time to block any buyer with a private feedback score, if that's allowed. Gonna check that out. Even if there are reasons like you guys said, it still speaks volumes about a person's character. I mean, if a guy would lie to his wife, would he cheat me ? So since a liar is a liar and a thief is a thief, I'd rather not be bothered with any of them. IMHO

I wonder how much business a seller loses by setting their feedback to private? I know when I see that private message where a number should be I don't even look at the rest of the auction, I just move on. If they wish to remain that private they probably have no business selling on a very public site and usually have something to hide.

Exactly. You look for any sign you can get to sort out the bad ones. This is a warning sign to me. edited
