This 1911-S is graded MS64 by PCGS. I wanted to get your opinion on the coin and if you think it's on the upper side or lower side of the grade. Also what would be your price. I am considering the purchase
From what I can see, it looks like a high end coin: sharp strike and very few marks. Bigger pictures would be better. I have no idea what I'd pay for this because I'm not even in the vicinity of the market for these.
A random MS64 from a coin seller looks to start around $1420. This probably isn't a nice one so I would say the absolute floor might be $1450. My initial gut feeling is saying .$1550 with an upper limit of around $1600. Thoughts?
I'd call it "average" at the grade, based on images a bit small for accurate grading. The latest real-world sales prices I was able to find were two from the Stack's/Bowers auction last month in Baltimore - a CAC'd example hammered at $2233 and one without a sticker went for $1586. I could see no qualitative differences between the two in their high-resolution images. Of the last 50 sales listed at the PCGS Auction Prices site (going back two years, and they include Ebay sales), only two have gone for less than $1600. I'd say it's a coin well-bought if you can get it for under $1600, and if the seller offering one at $1420 is genuine, snag it and consign it to an auction house.
Thanks SuperDave. To clarify on the $1420. I was looking on a retail sight at the "random" sight unseen prices for a MS64. I would assume those are all on the lower end so I set that as the floor.
The 1911 S is a slightly better issue. So somewhere about 1550 bucks is OK. I see a quality coin on the upper end of the ladder.
Please have a look on the details of the hair of Miss Liberty...Razor Sharp and seldom seen in this quality....
It is basically an expensive bullion coin. It is a mid to high 64, but is quite common. I would never buy it, with Gold prices facing an impending significant decline.
RED FLAG... "I was looking on a retail sight [sic] at the "random" sight unseen prices for a MS64" That means you are looking at a sample picture, not the coin you will get. Of course they chose the best on hand for the sample picture. The coin you get will be a PCGS MS64, probably sent to CAC and failed to bean.
As a potential buyer of a "Gem" 1911-S $20 who constantly follows this coin, I'm curious where you derived your posted values for this premium coin. I believe you'll find the current dealer wholesale bid "Grey Sheet" pricing at $1850 for this date/grade. I suspect an investigation of limited past eBay sales will show this coin selling at >$1800-$2100. JMHO
I believe the coin offered in this link/post might be indicative of what should be expected for their slightly less than current dealer wholesale price: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1911-S-US-G...781877?hash=item56856e3d75:g:D~cAAOSw~oFXGCZK JMHO
Unless I misunderstand, the coin in the picture isn't the sample pic for the "random MS64" listing. The random MS64 is being used as a floor for the potential price of the coin in post #1.
I recently acquired this 1911-S NGC MS64 at slightly more than the current $1850 "Grey Sheet" dealer wholesale price, which I find to be generally considerably less than total sales prices viewed in various venues completed auctions. I believe, all factors considered, the coin is comparable to the posting. JMHO
OP...The coin you posted looks better than most MS64 11-S $20s. Don't expect 11-S to like a 1924-25 or 27 of the same grade.
Nice looking coin, and I'd have no hesitation of buying it if I were looking for a $20 Lib... if that's the one I'd receive.
