I am trying to find out how Athenian Owls of the mid Fifth Century BC are priced, specifically the approximately 8.5 gram didrachma. I can find any number of listings in books and on line for the tetras and a few the one drachma pieces but none on the two drachma coin. Is this because it is a scarcer piece? At this weight it would be close to the Corinthian stater so I thought it might be more common. Thanks for any info on how the two drachma piece would be priced relative to the four drachma coin.

The 2 is much more rare and many fakes exist. I would expect a specimen to bring 10 times the price of the equivalent 4. Remember the $27500 does not include the buyer's fee. Foreign copies are easier to find.

Thanks. The reason I asked is that I started collecting coins several decades ago and this was one of my earlier coins. I recently started going through my collection and wanted to know what they might be worth. I got stuck on this one as Seaby's circa 1970's book does not list them and I could not find a single one on any of the auction sites. Unfortunately mine is not nearly as good, maybe a Fine on a good day. I have no idea where I bought it but it was probably at a show. I would post its picture but I have no idea how to do that. Thanks for the information as I have a rough ball park idea of its value.

You can take a surprisingly good coin picture with a smart phone if you have one.

Support the phone on a small box to steady it.

If I do that how do I get the picture from the phone to this page?

    I make it simple.
    1) email the photo to yourself.
    2) on a windows pc, I use the Snipping Tool program to select and copy from your emailed pic.
    3) Once I copy the photo, I just Paste it directly into the posting window on Coin Talk. Done!
