Price Guide for Blanks and Planchets?

I have been searching old posts with key words on Coin Talk for quite some time, and I can't find anything on going rates. Auction house listings don't have everything, and eBay sales I believe are highly inflated. I found a couple where people are guess-timating, but I am hoping for something printed or an online resource that my friends here refer to.

Where can I find information on average pricing for blanks and planchets (types 1 and 2) of U.S. modern and pre-1940 coins ?

I guess I am one of those guess-timating persons

I don't think there is a definite accurate list for values for Type 1 Blanks and Type 2 Planchets. Prices fluctuate depending on denomination, rarity, metal composition and age.

Well, you gave me info on the upset planchets for steelies, which absolutely helped.

But, for example, is a type 2 clad Ike really $100? Type 1 $175? Is a 40% silver really $1,000? I just want to make sure they aren't being sold for $50 at shows. I don't get to go to many shows outside my city but would like to add them to my collection of types 1 and 2.

And what about things like blank war nickels or others? Type 1 copper and zinc blanks?

I understand that different metals go for different rates, and supply and demand, etc. But I have to imagine there has to be someone on here who is a dealer who would know where to go to check if someone wanted to sell and there isn't one they can find from an auction.

Understand what you mean. Some prices seem kind of steep. Forget about the $1000.00 40% silver. Some sellers just want to take advantage of people who know nothing of prices to make that $$$ for their pockets :hungry::greedy:

I will one day try to make a list of values from different books and online sources that I am aware of.

But if someone else here has an idea then lets see. I will look and comment on it though ;)

I can vouch for the above values not being out of line for the Ike Dollars. I would eagerly pay $600 for a genuine 40% silver Ike planchet and $60 for a genuine clad planchet, whether T1 or T2. I'm not sure I'd pay a very significant premium to the T2 for a T1 planchet.

Would you say $75 for a type 2 kennedy silver is fair or overpriced?

    Yes.

Hmmm. Great question. I have to ask. What would the difference be?

I edited after I realized the dumb nature of my question . . . The 90% would apply to more than just Kennedy halves.

Well, someone just offered me a 90% type 2 kennedy for $75. I think that's a fair price, correct?

Sounds like a good price to me

I guess I'd be curious to know why it's necessarily a Kennedy instead of a Franklin or earlier half dollar. If you don't care, then it really doesn't matter.

Excellent point. I guess I just assumed. But it is 90% silver and a type 1 blank.

I know the Sacajawea and Presidential coins use the same gold-like planchet.

Please forgive me if I sound dumb, but I was told the Susan B. Anthony is the exact same planchet. (I am collecting Type 1 and 2 blanks and planchets). I said I want a sacajewa and a Susan B., but he said don't bother because it's the same. How can it be the same if sacajewa is gold-colored?

It's not the same! SBA is Clad and Sacagawea is a Golden Planchet... what he meant was the golden Sacagawea and Presidential Planchets are the same

Right. I saw they all weigh the same. I figured maybe the gold-color is added later, kind of like what they do with zinc cents.

But thanks for affirming. You are awesome, Paddyman98. I am buying you wings if you come to Buffalo

The person that could answer this question without a doubt is Brian Raines. Look him up on facebook. These things are about as fluid as anything can be. The price depends on the buyer, and yes the seller.. I can tell you that if Ken Potter were selling them, he could get a better price and sell them a whole lot easier than a regular Coin Dealer
