I have three presidential dollars that may be worth a look. They all have exactly circular "indents" sort of in reoccuring places. 1- 2007-D George Washington $1 Type A: 2 circles. One before 2007-D and one after E Plurbus Unum. 2- 2007-D James Madison $1 Type B: 2 circles. One before 2007-D and one after E Pluribus Unum (same places as on coin 1). 3- 2008-P Andrew Jackson $1 Type A: 3 circles. One before 2008-P, one after 2008-P, and one after E Pluribus Unum (two are same as on coin 1 and 2). As promised Tyler: @Tyler Graton All help appreciated, Thanks, -SC
I think that was tooled. Looks like some made a coin holder and those tool marks are where they put something. to hold it in place so the rim wouldn’t be affected by constant pounding, and so the coins rim could be visible. Are there multiple (maybe three or four) marks like that on each coin?
It's part of the design, Its suppose to have a dot separating the date and mintmark from E Pluribus Unum.
Look at it this way. You won't feel so stupid if you find a Washington Prez Dollar missing partial edge lettering. I sold mine in a 99c start auction on eBay for $228 about 5 years ago. Chris
The first year of the Prez Dollars resulted in a lot of screw-ups where edge lettering was concerned. I can't remember if there were any proof coins involved, but there were definitely uncirculated coins. Chris
Yeah I don’t know where I read that, but I would definitely listen to Chris because he been around the block and knows some things. Like i said that I wouldn’t listen to me regards to the edge lettering of pres dollars lol. I hate the pres dollars.
Yes, 2007 had missing, slipped, doubled. On the 2007-S Proof I think Jefferson some where the wrong order of lettering was used. It goes 2007-S E PLURIBUS UNUM but some had 2007-S IN GOD WE TRUST
Since with the proofs the edge lettering is applied DURING the striking and not afterward, the only way to have a proof without the edge lettering would be for it to be a broadstrike. And with two strikes and the higher pressure it would end up being noticeable wider than normal. As Soren mentioned there were some error Jefferson proofs that had the edge dies in the wrong order. Once that was discovered the edge die segments were changed in shape so that they couldn't be installed in the press in the wrong order. Surprisingly I have never heard of one being sold and most collectors don't even know they exist. Who knows how many of them may still be out there undiscovered and just thought to be a normal coin.
