    Presidential Dollars Question

I have been collecting rolls of Presidential dollars as they are released. I just realized I don't even like em.
Do any of the rolls carry a premium or should I just open them and spend them?

Wait and see what happens in 10 years.
You might be surprised or you might not.

Given time, you might realize that you were trippin when you thought that you didn't like them and now you really do. Once we get to Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, IKE and Kennedy ..it might seem more appealing to have the complete set in rollls.

If you sell now, you can always buy them back in the future ...lol.... but why?

im guessing your talking about bank wrapped rolls instead of mint wrapped

in my opinion - bank wrapped - no

mint wrapped - yes because they are sold for almost 36 each plus you know the mint they came from if you call that a premium. the latest Harrison rolls are going for crazy amounts lately.

try listing one on ebay. I have seen some go for 28-30 bucks, plus, a little extra you get for your shipping charge and you've made a little premium.

If you crack them open, be sure and check the edge lettering as some errors (doubling) or blanks edges have been catching nice premiums on ebay.

That is absolutely nuts... is there something wrong with every single Harrison dollar to get that kind of premium?

Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy every single presidential roll from the mint so I have to get them from the bank. I do have all the p and d rolls of each president so far, some off the bay in mint wrapping, most in bank wrapping.

I've not watched markets nearly long enough to make a generalization . . . but let me venture a guess at a generalization anyway . . .

It seems that right after an item is "sold out" at the Mint, prices go insane. Dangling a "sold out" sign in front of some buyers is like dangling a red cape in front of a bull.

This is pattern I've seen on a grand total of two items: 2009 Lincoln cents, and the Harrison Dollars.

(Hmmm . . . now that I think about it . . . I can't check eBay from work, but aren't Mint wrapped Rolls of DC Quarters sold out? If so, how are they doing on eBay?)

OK . . . so, does that generalization make sense? Is it in the ballpark?

*IF* (a big major if) the future dollars follow the pattern of the Harrison dollar, you might invest in a bit of speculation. I.e., purchase the a set of the next Pres dollars when they come out (that'd be Tyler), wait till it sells out at the mint, and then sell it on eBay. Take the proceeds, purchase a bank roll, and still have profit left over. Worse comes to worse, you can probably sell it for what you got it for, and your net loss is the postage. Given the huge margins on Harrison, it might be worth this small dollar risk.

The $36 Harrison rolls in USMint wrappers seem to be selling for around $100 on eBay. It doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me (the combination of it being sold out *and* it's well known to have the lowest mintage of any coin). . . but it is what it is. Word is that Tyler will also have a low mintage, so maybe it will follow the same pattern.

Thanks for posting how NUTS ebay is going over the WH Harrison dollars. I stopped by the bank today and scored one roll. I 'm going to try to buy another couple and sell them on ebay myself (I'll keep one). Heck, if people are nuts out there, then I could stand to make a little profit (so that I can buy more coins, evil laugh).

Note: buyers are going nuts over rolls that have the US Mint wrap on them. I'm not so sure about the bank rolls. Check to make sure first!

Yes, thanks, I see that there is a big difference. The one I got at the bank was the directship type from the mint, so it has the less desirable wrap. However, it does look like there is a premium, albiet small, for the direct ship ones.

I'll still see if I can get some more from the bank....

You know . . . you can get direct ship from the US Mint . . . 10 rolls ($250) for $250, and shipping, etc., is free. (And if you get a rebate from your credit card, well . . . you come out ahead). OTOH, it can take weeks to get them . . .

    FWIW,

They are sold out....that is why there is such a premium on them...

Hi, the direct ship rolls are part of the reason for Harrison premiums on ebay. The Harrison dollar has'nt been listed in the direct ship rolls, plus they were'nt available in bags from what i've heard. I assume the extra low Harrison dollar mintage was the reason. the lack of bags & direct ship rolls also made the mint rolls really hot.

    Rolls

I think the rolls will probably carry a premium in the future. But i did'nt like having so much money tied up in rolls. I started opening my rolls, with cloth gloves on i placed the most pristine coins in direct fit airtites. I also purchased a direct fit album that holds 5 airtites per page. By pristine i mean that i only saved the coins with minimal marks. Some rolls would only produce one pristine coin, others 3 or 5 per roll on average. I also checked for errors that i was aware of. I did'nt really grade them, i simply looked for the best eye appeal. So my album contains the finest of the rolled coins. The buyer of this album would need a ton of rolls to duplicate it. I'm not sure if i'll sell it as a lot, or break it down into individual sets. Oh, and the 90% of the coins not making the album were spent.
