Hi All, I am not sure if I read it on a post here or an online article but are there presidential dollars that were not released to the public for one reason or another but have been found outside? John
They no longer mint them for general circulation. You can't get them from banks, but you can buy them in rolls and bags from the mint.

If the mint sells them for $1 it might be worth getting a bag, picking out the nicest 50 and then selling the remaining 950 to a bank at face. If they end up melting that issue you could have something.
banks shouldn't be selling any money for more than it's face value. if they are they are probably in some type of violation. i worked at a bank for many years and if we did that we would have been terminated on the spot. banks are not in the business of selling coins for collector values.
Banks don't sell individual coins. They do have a charge for providing large amounts of change to a business. Sorry urbanchemist, I was typing as you were responding.....
the bank i worked at did not charge for large change orders. this was company wide. my branch for instance had many large business customers that would get large change orders on a daily basis. sometimes they would come in multiple times a day.(with armed guards) if we could not accommodate the change order we would contact the closet branch to us.
Pres Dollars are now only available from the US Mint, and at a premium to face value. They are no longer issued for distribution at face value by banks. A bag of 100 coins is priced at $111.95 A roll of 25 coins is priced at $32.95 A box of 250 coins is priced at $275.95 A box of 500 coins is priced at $550.95 All orders are subject to a $4.50 shipping fee. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...1&parent_category_rn=16238&top_category=16238
Some banks do. The thing is the coins do not belong to the bank. They are supplied by a dealer or other outside company. The bank sells them and gets a percentage of the price. Around here they are supplied by Silvertowne because they are just a few miles down the road.
