Is there any merit to these A & B position dollar coins? I guess that the A & B stand for the direction the edge lettering is facing on the coin. I just went through a roll of John Adams and I guess its about 60 / 40 in the lettering. I would assume it should be about 50 / 50. Out of curiosity is the edge lettering applied before the coin is struck? I would think that if it was done at the time of the strike that all of the lettering would be the same, unless it's a matter of how the mint employee put the dies into the machine. Thank, David
Mint officials have been repeatedly quoted as saying that the edge lettering is applied after the basic strike of obverse and reverse, and that circulation coins are randomly fed into the lettering mechanism, so the lettering will statistically be oriented about 50-50. The proof coins are handled differently, and will all have the lettering upright when the coin is face up. My guess is that there have been well over a dozen threads on this subject in this forum.
