i have a quick question about the presidential dollar series. I got a few of them in pocket change. I was looking at some new ones i just got and they seem to be duller than the older ones...they look a little more silver and they made the text smaller and squeezed "in god we trust". So my question is: why did they change it? Is the rest of the series going to look like that? I don't like it. They are alot more shiney but i like the golden look better
The "IN GOD WE TRUST" used to be on the edge of the coin, but the bible thumpers didn't like that. So it got moved. And, of course, that required rearranging other elements on the coin. OT: What I find interesting is that I can't find singles at shows. I keep a friend supplied so I buy one for him whenever I can. I personally don't collect them. A local 30-40 dealer show had no one selling singles. Same with the big Baltimore Whitman show. The guy I used to buy from died and it looks like no one has stepped up to fill in that void. Probably the profit margin doesn't merit dealing with those coins. State quarters now appear to be in the same boat.
I think the ones you find in circulation must have been circulating for a while and that has discolored them. The new issues that I get at the bank every time are as golden and shiny as the first year. They changed the text when the Washington and Adams coin came out and it was discovered that some had been released without the edge lettering making "godless" dollars. So, they decided to put it on the face of the coin where it belongs. It's to bad to hear that you don't like it that way but it's better to figure that out now than after you are 5 years into the series ...lol. If you want shiney golden dollars, try your bank or a coin show for the latest issues.
Unusual. Most of the shows around me have those things in rolls, singles, sets, etc. I know one dealer at one of the shows around here always has piles of those loose. I too don't collect those things but someone I know buys them for his Dad at all those shows which is why I know they are there. We have 4 coin shows a month around here so almost anything you need or want eventually pops up. And if you get to know some dealers they will find what your looking for.
Thanks. I'll ask my bank about it or go to the auction next 2 weeks. want to buy nice uncirculated ones anyway. The in god we trust on the front isn't too bad just makes it a little harder to see. But i like the gold better.
If you want a nice P& D set for your album and don't want to waste time hunting at banks and going to shows, you can order the yearly set from the mint. It's not that over priced for the convenience factor and they are satin finish which looks wicked in the Dansco. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=14781&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=34738
I purchased a few 2009 presidential dollars (P & D) at the coin show in Norwich, NY. Quite a few of the dealers were selling them for $1.50 to $2.00 a piece in BU condition. They got the upcharge of $0.50 for the D coins that are rarely found in circulation on the east coast.
My local dealer sells them for $1.95 a piece. They do tone very quickly. My grandson collects them. Here in Pa. I can get the Philadelphia coins at Soverign Bank. I've had to buy him the D mints.
I bought a pricing guide book at the auction a few days ago. just flipping thought the pages i found the presidential coins. The pictures they have in the book start off gold then by 2009 they go to black and white......any explanation for that? it also said about a first spouse series for the presidents. It seems really cool to have the matching sets. So does anyone have a price on them? For an nice conditioned one my book says it goes for $500. And on ebay they got for a few thousand..........thats a bit pricey for me.
Simple answer, when was the book compiled and printed? Most likely it was in 2008. How could they have had color photos of 2009 coins in 2008? What you saw in the book were most likely artists renditions of what the 2009 coins were going to look like. Likewise on the prices of the First spouse coins. the first spouse coins (raw) pretty much go for the spot price. When the book was written back in 2008 gold was probably around $800 and oz. Today it is over $1100. And if you are looking at the prices of certified coins on ebay the grade makes a big difference. Yes a 70 coin might go for thousands, but a 68 may not be much more than a raw coin.
I buy a roll at a time sometimes from the US Mint - Sometimes from my local bank, Just as long as I have a roll from each president. I just ordered a roll of the Zachary Taylor thursday from the US Mint just cuz the bank runs out sometimes and it's getting into the holidays.
