A couple of days before we went on vacation I opened an album of presidential dollar proofs I had started, but never finished. There are only two or three years present, and really this album has not been opened in years. Low and behold on several of the coins the "gold" outer coloring is gone and these areas are "silver" looking. The coins affected may have this silver appearance on the devices and/or fields. Is this silver area a manganese under layer? This is certainly not an expensive set to complete, but I don't want to do this if this is what I have to look forward to. How disappointing this is to have such junk coming from the mint, but the vacation was great.

It may be helpful to post several relevant examples, so the more knowledgeable members can offer assistance.

Please consider taking photos and posting same of the album, inclusive of manufacturer and open/closed format. I am particularly interested in this aspect.

I have not checked my presidentials but I can say I do have several Saqs that did this. I was like you, initially turned off by it, but decided to let it go. Sure enough, as the toning progressed it did look quite nice with more of a silvery/platinum look to it. I'll have to see if I can get a pic tonight when I am home from work, but I can understand your frustration. Personally...just let the toning go.
