President Portrait engraving On Indian penny reverse?

    I have never seen such detail on an old penny engraving. this is an 1879 indian head in decent shape and i believe the porterait is of president van buren. i love this coin! anyone seen anything similar?

    Since the subject died in 1862 it is hard to say when or why the engraving was made.

    Yes, nice obverse with lots of detail and a wonderful engraving. Kind of a good subject for "History Detectives" - a show that used to be on PBS a few years ago.
