Presdient Ronald Reagan on U.S. Coins?

As much as I believe that Ronald Wilson Reagan personafied the Liberty, Freedom and the American Spirit, a commemorative coin is in order, but NOT a coin for regular issue.

I am sure that he would want something like Lady Liberty to grace our coins again. Something that represents what America is all about...her freedom, her spirit and her majesty!

With HR3916 being discussed in Washington about putting ALL of the Presidents on future dollar coins starting in 2006 (similiar to the State Quarter Program) ALONG with the First Ladies on pure gold PREMIUM coins, it is important for us to write our congressman with our thoughts on such a proposal. Otherwise, the mint is going to poll a 1000 people and take the American opinion about dollar coins and paper dollars as gospel.

I remember when National Airport in D.C. was renamed to Reagan National Airport, the uproar that ensued. I am sure the debate will take place if Reagan was to grace our coins. Many have been talking about having him "share" the dime mintage with Roosevelt.

Write your Congressman. Believe me, nobody else is going to write about American coinage and you can have your opinions heard before they put EVERYBODY on American coins...from Ronald Reagan to Hillary Clinton!

There are two bills currently discussing Reagan on both coins and currency. None for a commem at this time.

 

Which coins and which currency, National Dealer?

I am guessing it is the Dime and the Half-Dollar in the coin department.

 

Reagan dimes - that has a nice ring to it.

 

As much as I admired Reagan, he doesn't belong on the dime. While we're at it, take FDR off and get back to the classic Liberty types of coins. I know, wishful thinking.

 

Birds of a feather, cholmes75. I want the Liberty styled coins back as well.

But until we can convince them, the Gipper dime will do.

Well, I am just guessing that after 40 years it may be time to start thinking about a new design for the Half-Dollar, however, that wouldn't go over well with certain political partisans, namely one senator (hiccup!) from Massachusetts.

The Reagan dime sounds fine to me too.

 

Are you kidding? Taking Kennedy off of the half dollar will not have a chance until all the baby boomers are long in the grave.

 

reagan doesn't belong on any money. we need to go back to the liberty and eagle designs and get rid of the dead guys.

 

Put Reagan on the $2 bill. Then it might circulate.

Also, why boot Hamilton off the 10? I'd rather see them boot Grant off the 50, if someone has to go. Hamilton did a lot more for our country than the much-maligned Grant did.

 

If anything, let's put Reagan on a commemorative piece and have the profits go to Alzheimer's research.

 

Reagan on a $2 dollar bill is a great idea.

 

Surely all of our congressional members are looking at the revenue that has been generated with our state quarter program. I don't understand why we don't have 10-20 new coins a year. Or, are the profits the mint makes off of the coins they sell not what I suspect they are?

Oh, they are huge.

The problem is that government has never been a really good steward of our money (or their own for that matter). Through fat outsourcing deals, I am sure that we will be seeing changes in our coinage for quite some time to come, just so they can continue to run in the black.

Which reminds me - I need to dig up the Treasury dept budget and find out how much of the mint's operating revenue is produced by the sale of their wares. Sounds like a fun Sunday project, eh?

 

I go along with this as well. Everyone that says put Reagan on a coin would freak out at the thought of putting Clinton on a coin when he dies.. and vise-versa.

I prefer the old Liberty coins.

One heck of a way to make a proft - $0.06 per coin minted (11.2B coins minted, $672.794MM profit)

This does not include $600MM turned back to the Treasury for their portion of operating expenses.

 

Is that profit on just business strike coins, or on the collectible products as well? They should separate the two -- profits from seignorage (spelling?) is different from profits from selling proof sets.
