I am new to the forum. It is great that we can talk about coins whenever it strikes us. No PUN intended...
I was wondering if I should buy rolls of the P and D or just buy one of each. Any suggestions????

Welcome to the forum!!!! If you like the new dollar coins then by all means buy a roll of each. Collecting coins is an individual effort as far as buying goes. If you like it, buy it. Dont go by what everyone else tells you to buy. Thats what makes all of our interests different. Have Fun!!!

I plan on getting a P and D roll of washington from the mint. Not a huge mark up and I think they will be fun to collect.

    I am just wondering:

Why would any one buy a roll of 25 from the mint for $35.95 + shipping charges when you can get a roll from a bank for the face value for $25 and save on shipping? There won't be any quality difference, either. What am I missing?

Well, the ones at your bank are most likely from bags. The bags are then rewrapped into rolls by a company for the bank. The coins in bags get all dinged up when they are transported so in all likelyhood, they'll look worse than the ones you get from a US Mint roll. And then there is the fact that depending on where you live, you can only get the P _or_ the D mint marks.

Thanks for a quick reply! That helps... I thought all commercial outfits get rolls. Did not think about the bags...

Well, I should add, that I could be wrong :). But I'm fairly certain banks all get bags that are rewrapped.

You're not missing a thing. All coins that leave the mint are shipped in huge bags that require a forklift just to lift them. Then some banks just order rolls and some order smaller bags, but in both cases they are bagged or rolled by a commercial distribution company.

Ahhhh - another first. Now then a question - will these rolls have the mint's markings on them ?

Sweet, so if I can get a few new rolls from the bank that are from the mint... I'd be Hip to do that...

I wouldn't mind putting up a few of each, just because I'm a coin hoarder...

When I die, someones going to have a time emptying out my basement....

I want to build a coffie table thats got a coinwell where the coins roll down in circles and end up in a big keg or drum in the basement...

No one has said if these wrappers will have a special marking, but I'm hoping they do. And unless I missed it, you need to keep in mind that your bank will usually only have Denver or Philly rolls on hand depending on what part of the country you live. You'll still probably have to buy the other from the mint or the secondary market.

I got a roll today and its not marked with US Mint if that is what you mean--in fact it has the name of a wrapper company---but then it also says on the wrapper "George Washington". They are nice but I'm sure not going to collect them.

Speedy,is that referring to the rolls,or to the Presidential Dollars? They'd make a cool education tool to teach new immigrants about the Presidents of America,& in what order they served.

you know I do not even know order the presidents served in other than maybe the first 3 or so. Sad but true but then again it is not something that really comes up a lot.

One of the local banks now say they are going to get some of the presidential coins . Something about an e-mail they had received. I now wonder if they ordered Mr. president George or were they "ask" to take some of these. I shall endevor to find out.
