I agree DeOrc...but the american people are funny that way. With all the SAC's out there they should melt all they have to make the new Pres dollars. That would boost the Sac collectors who were loyal to the mint for buying....then melt the ugly ole Susan B and be done with it. RickieB
In my area the only people that have shown any interest in collecting the presidential coins are the very few collectors I know. The banks around here do not want them and I am not sure if any even know they are making them. My little collecting group at work have been discussing how are we going to get them and it looks like now we will have to order a few from the mint. That is kind of sad in my book especially if the mint is really trying to promote their use. Very few people seem to know about them. Much like susie and sacagawea they will be collector item on a limited basis. If it were not for George being the lead off hitter so to speak, I have serious doubts if it would ever get off the ground. I agree that the only thing that would make them accepted would be to take the dollar bill off the market. Then you have the penny and the nickel to deal with. No nickel then what would you do with the quarter. The mint and the powers to be may have to accept that there will be some lost money items out there. It is not like they have stockholder to answer to or will ever go broke. I understand stand the mint may be the only branch of the government that actually makes a little money. just my thoughts
How true! Last Saturday I asked my bank if they were going to have the New Dollar coins next week. Their reply... "What new dollar coins?"
I think the President dollars will be the death of $1 bill. It my take most of the ten years of the program but I think its coming and not so much because of the president s coins but because of the part of the law that mandates 1/3 of the dollar coin production be Sackies. Every year the mint must make 100s of millions of the Sackie coins and most will end up in storage. Eventually the Fed. will say "enough", suspend production of the paper dollar and ship the coins in there place. As for when? Watch for when Crane(the paper maker) loses their strong support in the Senate.(Kennedy & Kerry)
