Potential value for 2004 CLAD Proof Mint sets?

    Hi everyone,

I have been watching the 2004 CLAD (11 coin) Proof Mint sets on EBay and they have been increasing in price daily. Does anyone think because they have the lowest mintage since 1960 that they have the potential to increase in value beyond the 1999 Silver Proof set which is currently selling in the range of $250 - $300.

What does everyone think about this?

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi! :)

A 1960 silver proof set is worth, what? $15-$20 bucks?

I think the deeper question is; "why is the mintage of this modern clad set so low?" ;)

Update: One year later... these are going for $60 giver or take $5 or so on eBay. Still that's pretty good for only a 1-year-old clad proof set. I think what you were seeing happening a year ago was a spike in demand due to speculation of their values based on their mintages... but demand has cooled to pretty much its equilibrium value. Mintage isn't the only determining factor in value for proof sets... what really matters is supply relative to demand. Even if the mintage is low, if almost everyone has one that wants one, the value won't be especially high. Still, triple its issue price after only one year is nothing to sneeze at. Look at some of the other 1999-2004 clad proof sets. The excitement of the 50 state quarters, plus the Sacagaweas that haven't been issued for general circulation since 2001, is driving up the value of recent proof sets by quite a lot.

Ironically, again because of supply relative to demand, the clad sets have gone up in value more than the silver ones in some cases.
