Anyone post ad’s on Craigslist or anything to obtain coins? How about yard sales? Let’s hear some success stories
The only successful Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace coin transactions I've completed were when I was selling bullion - silver bars/rounds/eagles or the like. Literally every other transaction included lowballers, time wasters, and obscenity-laden death threats. Yes, death threats...solely because I included that my price was firm in the ad. Craigslist is for crazy people. Usually, if I tried to post something at a fair price, or buy something at a fair price, all the predatory Craigslist coin buyers will report my post until it's kicked off the site. Tried to sell a laptop on Craigslist once. Put that I wouldn't drive into downtown St. Louis for any reason (because I kept getting stood up, and then I'd wasted an hour of my time and an hour's worth of gas.) Craigslist responses? Death threats. So I don't mess with Craigslist any more. For anything. Good riddance. I stick to auctions, flea markets, antique malls, and eBay cherrypicking. Every once in a while I'll pick up something interesting in the B/S/T forum here.
I find stuff all the time at these sales. Last week 3 of Confederate currency, $30.00++ of sliver @ melt in all grades. Morgans, Peace, Washington, Merc, Roses. Then pick up rejected coins from one of the local grocery stores that have a coin sorter. Then I go metal detecting and find more, besides the cashiers at the banks that save stuff for me.
Agreed - if you're buying or selling anything of value, meeting in person at a neutral site is a must - bring a friend or two for safety & watch you back. eBay is much saner and safer - plus it's easier to get you money back for bad goods. Yard sales can pay off, but only if you ask nicely if the seller has any old coins they'd like to cash out - the coins will seldom be on display, but inside the house - bring along a printout of that morning's http://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html chart and offer melt value, a bit more for silver dollars.
There is a guy at coin shows in Buffalo who will meet you out in public somewhere as he doesn't have a store and doesn't want people to know where he lives. Very reasonable prices as he always says he doesn't want to take his coins to his grave. Often goes under grey sheet for premium pieces.
Well.. Not exactly the same.... At Christmas time I walked by a coworkers desk and saw these two pieces on her desk. Well my attention perked up. They were hand me-downs and she was taking them to a “sell your gold” type place. She had struck a deal for $250.00 with them. I saved her a trip and gave her $400.00 for both pieces. She was overjoyed and I was pleased that I made her happy and got a good deal myself. Just luck that I happened to walk by her desk that day.
