This was the first Trade Dollar I had ever acquired.

 

I don't have a single trade dollar yet but will need one for my type set. This thread is making me want to get one already

I'm a huge fan of trade dollars their a beautiful coin love the proof trades especially I only have one proof so far tho

 

They fill the whole from Seated Liberty to Morgan. There was only a few years of them ('73 - '85). My short term goal is to put together a roll of them in XF or better.

and their better looking than either in my opinion my long term goal is to get all the proofs except 84 and 85 I have about 10 trades all are fairly high grade except one I posted which came in a lot be careful buying these raw there's a ton of fakes even old counterfeits too

 

LoL, Contemporary counterfeits have a value of their own. Societies in other countries sometimes collect them.

Checking the weight is always a good idea when buying. Watch for VAMs that don't match, etc.

Well, I'm not sure this one stacks up to the others, but it's my only one and it sits in my Type Set place holder for right now (I am actually not sure what to make of all the chop marks, I think it's excessive and possibly used to hide problems on it).

 

Just curious, but what type of problems do you think they're hiding?

 

Actual gouges in the coin, like the bottom left wing with what looks like a nike swoosh. That, or someone might have had a low grade Trade Dollar and decided they could get more money for one with chop marks. I have a friend who collects chopmarks and here is what he opined:

I've looked through 23 years of "Chopmark News" and haven't found a single chopmarked coin image that displays either a solid triangular punch mark (for testing) or a solid triangular chop. Test marks are described (and shown in Chopmark News images) as either a small round or small square punches in the coin's surface.

On your coin's obv at 9:00 the elongated triangular mark and it's rev, the two triangular marks: one at about 5:30 close to the center, and one at 10:30 half way between the center and the rim resemble test punches, but these three marks would likely have made caused me not to purchase this coin. They certainly resembles test punches, but they may chops that I haven't come across yet or they may be fake.

 

I prefer the potty $'s.
