I have posted this coin on another forum but I would love to hear your guys thoughts on the coin. From what I hear its quite rare. This coin I originally believed to be that of Trebonianus Gallus but I was wrong. One of the local experts helped ID this coin. Now I figure I would show it to a new crowd and see what you guys thought. This emperor ruled for only three months.

    Aemilian. 253 AD.
    Antoninianus,. (2.31g) 20.8mm x 22.0mm Rome Mint
Obverse: IMP AEMILIANVS PIVS FEL AVG Bust radiate, draped, cuirassed right.
Reverse: DIANAE VICTRI Diana standing left holding arrow and bow.

He is rare and I wonder if lemon juice would remove the crud? It looks like the same stuff as my volusian. It would help make the coin a tad better.

You can see how rough it was and it's after here :http://www.cointalk.com/t218129/

It would seem the attribution is correct. ERIC lists the obverse legend as #3, although the word FEL on your coin confuses me: the F is closed and looks like a P, and the E has a vertical line in front of it. Die chips perhaps? The reverse type is #7 in ERIC.

I agree with Mat that the obverse might be improved with a bit of conservation.

I'm not sure I would mess with this coin. It is rare enough and I wonder if trying to remove the crud might make it look worse.

A good find, considering that you undoubtedly got it for a good price. But I wouldn't consider it rare - there are two dozen on CoinArchives!

It's medium rare - just how I like my steak. :)

Kind of beat up, but then again he is around 1,700 years old. Good find though, I need this one too. :)

I've only ever owned one Aemilian, a bashed up (more so than yours) Viminacium issue. I sold it in an auction for about $15 and regret it. I've since started collecting Viminacium coins and it would cost me considerably more to replace it.

Just for the story that comes with the coin its worth a spot in your collection IMHO :thumb:

It's amazing any of those coins could be found at a reasonable price since he ruled only for three months in AD 253. I recently saw a solid VF double-denarius (Roma standing reverse) go for $250 on E-bay.

Yea I mean I think I paid like a couple dollars for it off the bay unattributed like a year or so ago.

I found the coin. It went for $250 last month (not my coin):

    :too-funny:

Not my coin. That said, I do appreciate Vagi's having assessed the coin's authenticity when buying on the internet from an unknown dealer with no Ancient cred.
