To show Sallant he is not alone!

When I just started out, I bought a lot of 6 coins, three of which were identified as fake on another forum.

Julia Domna Pietas with more bubbles than I have seen before. Spot the surface.

This is the only fake I own at the moment, Claudius as. It's a souvenir token distressed to look ancient. Shallow devices and a casting seam. I don't think the piece was originally meant to deceive as there's no attempt to hide the seam - probably something you might buy in a gift shop at an ancient site. The person that distressed it, however, WAS trying to deceive...

I had a fake Alexander drachm earlier in the year, but it was returned to the seller. I'll see if I still have a pic.

Thank you @Pishpash . I feel better this morning. It's still not a pleasant feeling, but I suppose that's part of the risks we take in this sort of hobby. I'm just glad it was spotted as a fake because that is now one less fake that will be passed on to an unsuspecting person in the future.

It goes without saying that I have nothing but disdain for forgerers.

@zumbly whilst I "like" your post, it's not that it is a fake, but that seam is a great example :D

Just based on the photo, I would be surprised if @zumbly coin is fake. Looks perfectly normal to me. That is not a casting seam.

Well @zumbly perhaps we found a perfect candidate to send to @Barry Murphy at NGC for verification. You can always crack it out later if it comes back OK, but at least you'll feel better about it one way or another

IMO, That is not a typical edge seam found on a cast ancient. Just curious, who decided the coin was a counterfeit? You, an ancient coin dealer, a TPGS?

Care to photo another part of the edge?

EDIT: As usual I didn't read past the post I replied to.:facepalm: I was being charitable...Barry is 100% correct! The coin is genuine. Don't waste the money sending it in. :cigar:

You could have convinced me either way on Zumbly's coin---Jeez!!!!

My two KNOWN fakes, acknowledged by the sellers, have been deleted from my photo album and refund/exchange already accomplished, including a silver tetrobol of Histaia and a bronze of Hanniballianus.

I keep a record even of the ones that I have returned. However, many of the sellers of these fakes just tell me to keep them even though they give me a refund. When they don't argue or ask for the coin's return, it makes me think they knew all along what they were selling.

This points out again what has been discussed in ALL coin forums...fakes. With US coins, many here know correct devices, etc. and can pick out fakes easily. With foreign coins, it becomes more difficult, and perhaps even more so with ancients. The gurus here have saved my posterior more than once. What would help the most are guidelines to detect fakes and those who post fakes to say why they think the coins are fakes. That first coin with the bubbles is a good example, could this happen with a genuine coin...fourree?

  20. Fake Celtic Alexander Imitation
The first non-Roman ancient I bought on ebay, years ago. I thought it was genuine for months. Turns out, it's one of the most commonly faked celtics. I've seen several on Ebay since.

  21. The seller listed that he also knew it was fake and was just throwing it in with the other 7 just to get rid of it.
