We are having that debate regarding online (read that Ebay) versus in person purchases. Post some of your nicest coins that you have gotten from a show or Brick and Mortar source. I will start off (was not going to spend this kind of money for this date without seeing it in person). Got it at a show from a large dealer who deals both online and from shows and shop:
If I didn't attend a coin show this would never have happened: STANLEY @ THE ANA I forgot these were in my phone. I was waiting for the shuttle to the ANA on Thursday morning I had taken a couple of small muffins for a snack, and meant to bring them to my room. I put them on the bench and suddenly had company: This is after I gave him a tiny piece. Click this bar to view the full image. A man offered to feed him: Click this bar to view the full image. So, I got brave and tried to feed him my self. But there was no free lunch with me He had to work for it, so.. I made him beg for the food: Click this bar to view the full image. he was very gentle, and used one paw to steady himself on my finger while gently taking the food with his teeth! He never touched my hand [with his mouth]. Click this bar to view the full image. I had to rush to the shuttle so I gave the rest of the muffin the guy to feed him. A stewardess was watching and exclaimed "You named him!?" So I told her How else is he going to know that I have food for him? She just shook her head. I said, silly lady. Stanley didn't care, he wanted food. See what you miss by buying on-line?
I bought this for about 1/3rd of what online dealers want for it from a local coin show. Its an Ostrogothic gold coin struck after the fall of Rome. Here is the reverse:
I only have 2 out of 67 purchased in person: Coin Show: In Person at B&M in Windham, Maine in 1987 or 1988 Raw. Sent to NGC by me, Sent to CAC by me.
There are no good deals at shows. You guys are not figuring all the cost associated with going to a show.
The shows I go to are in Maine, used to be in Portland (1 minute away), now I need to drive 20 minutes to Brunswick, but still, basically free. Okay, maybe $5 in gas. Some shows are right in peoples back yard.
You still increase the risk of car accident causing death. Gas, wear and tear of vehicle. Plus your time is worth money. You also run the risk of being raped or killed for your coins leaving a show.
And buying on the internet can lead to your information getting stolen and losing thousands of dollars. Every venue has its risks. What's your point?
The Almighty rolled a skein of your life long ago. Go hide under a rock, if you must, but you won't live one minute longer........
Frank, The story about Stanley reminded me of something that occurred in 1974. We were having an outdoor party at a neighbor's townhouse when a squirrel popped up on the stockade fence. One of the guys decided to start feeding the little critter, and everyone was enjoying the scene. All of a sudden the little bass turd decided to bite him on the finger. It wouldn't let go despite shaking and shaking his hand. Finally he slammed it against the fence and the sucker took off. Needless to say, he had to get a tetanus shot and 13 stitches. Chris
Since I'm on ignore I thought it would be a little ironic if I posted the only coin I have paid cash for in over ten years to a dealer at a show. @Amanda Varner sold me this coinfacts coin example. One of my five prized coinfacts coins. By the way the whole squirrel thing reminded me of my college days when I had m&ms in my coat pockets and I would let the squirrels run up my leg and grab a m&m then run to safety to eat it. Again coin with cat selfie.
