Mine has to be my 1914s barber quarter. Mintage is only 264,000 but you can get a great deal on it in pretty much any grade, especially the lower ones. What is yours? :)

The 1888 3 cent piece, 36,501 minted. In Good, Numismedia says $44.Let's compare that to some other key dates. 1877 cent: 852,000 1909 s vdb cent: 484,000 1932-s quarter: 484,000 1916-D dime: 264,000 . In Good, 600+ for most of these. Most 0.03, Silver and Nickel, are extremely undervalued. Don't own any though :p

You're absolutely right about those 3 cent pieces! I also have a couple of seated quarters... 1860s (56,000) and 1868 (29,400) but unfortunately they'd struggle to make AG on a good day. Still a pleasure to have them though :) I think that 1914s is just totally underappreciated.

Some more 3c. 1855- 139,000 1876-162,000. In the Barber halves the 1911 d had 95,080 minted and $13 on numismedia. completely unrelated: when i found the 1911 d in 2006 redbook there was a typo it said 1911d6 :p

the 1955-D Washington Quarter ive got i purchased for 50c. over melt, and it is like the 3rd or 4th lowest minted quarter with a mintage of only a little over 2million. I find that very interesting that you can still buy them for melt when you can buy inbetween dates with mintages of 100million+ for melt. Give it a few more years and there might be a dramatic price increase.......hopefully; Ive got a full roll ;) lol.

The most underrated coin I own ? Easy call. It's a pattern. This one is Judd-869, an 1870 Standard Silver struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Why do I call it underrated ? This crazy thing is rarity r.7+... only 4 known ! That makes it rarer than a 1913 V Nickel, and 3 times rarer than an 1804 Dollar ! ...and yet it's less than 4 grand, 99.9% less than the coins mentioned above.

I guarantee you... as patterns become more mainstream, their prices will skyrocket. Since the Redbook started including them, I think the sky's the limit.

As you can guess, I'm very bullish on patterns.

    How do you define underrated?

    Is there such a thing?

I'm going to say my 1931-S Lincoln cent with a mintage of 866,000. It has a lower mintage than the 1914-D but there's wayyyy more examples that are uncirculated.

For the Morgan CC's, the 1885-CC has the lowest mintage of all of them at 228,000. It remains very affordable since about 148,000 (65%) were made available in the Treasury releases of the 70's. The optimal collecting grade is considered to be MS65 which makes for a very pretty coin, yet the certified population is only about 4,000 in this grade. This is my PCGS MS65 VAM-4 Hot 50.

A coin that you believe should be higher-priced/more sought-after/etc.

Almost the entire US Philippines series underrated (in my opinion). You can buy MS65 examples of the 1944 coinage for below silver melt, and there are several dates in the series where less than 500 were minted, and even they sell for a minimal premium.

This is probably the one in the series that I own that was the 'most undervalued' - someone had it listed on eBay as a 1903 5 Centavo (it's a silver 20 centavo).

I have to nominate my 1936-D Texas commemmorative in MS-64. That year there were only @9,000 minted in p,d,s for a total of @ 27,000. Add to that a kickin' design and still this goes for only @ $200.

The low mintage of the 31 S was noted at the time, and many were put aside by collectors and casual hoarders. This was not the case with the 14 D.

I just picked up a 1951 British penny on eBay for $21. The mintage is either 120,000 or 240,000, I'd have to check. I think it's cool to know that I own something that only a few hundred thousand of them exist in the world.

I already know that, I even said it in my post! There were more 31-S's put back in uncirculated grades than 14-D's. The 14-D wasn't recognized as a key date till like the 30's so almost all of them went into circulation to get worn down. But like you said, the 31-S mintage was noted at the time so more were saved because of the lower mintage. The 14-D wasn't noted at the time. That is why the value jumps so much between MS grades on 14-D's. So you will see a 31-S in MS-64 or 65 selling for about $500-$600. While the 14-D in the same grade will sell for thousands, probably tens of thousands.

I have a couple low mintage nickels I feel are under rated and under priced 1994-P Matte mintage of 167,703 and 1997-P Matte mintage of 25,000
I picked them up relatively cheap considering how few were made .. less then my monthly heating bill.. and that's just "Burning Money" :)
at least with the coins I still have two nickels to rub together .. :D

How about 1876 twenty cent piece? It has a mintage of only 14,640 and greysheet is only $215 in Vg. The list of underated coins goes on and on if you compare them to other series. To really determine a coins potential, you have to compare them to other coins of the same series. For example, there were 866 thousand 1931s cents minted. The redbook price is $110 in G-4. There are tons and tons of coins in other series that have much lower mintages and could be bought for less. So why doesn't these coins values rise? Because their series do not have the massive collector base that wheat cents have. So these coins might be underated, but their prices will never match thier more popular counterparts.
