Many collectors have a hobby budget either on paper or in their head. (Or kept in their spouse’s head.)

A running stream of funds can easily produce a corresponding stream of **$$$-WOW!!!-$$$** ancient coin purchases. However, many collectors are restricted to a comparatively low level of available hobby funds. Thankfully for these collectors there are decent (key word) ancient coins available for less than $30!

To paraphrase a familiar saying: “Decent is in the eye of the beholder”. But if either side looks like a Rorschach ink blot -- it’s probably sub-decent.

Below is a decent coin I recently purchased for less than $30 total out-of-pocket without even haggling over price. I simply and happily paid the online list price.

For this price range it has nice centering, readability of the IC XC, near completeness of the reverse legend, and especially facial details showing hair, eyes, eyebrows, nose, moustache, mouth, and beard. Anyway...

Let’s see your recent and decent, genuine ancient coin purchases that cost you under $30 total out-of-pocket including shipping, handling, insurance, buyer’s fees, tax-title-&-license.

I bought this coin because of the unusual abbreviation of Caesar on the obverse-- CS. The price with shipping was 24.50.

I just received this coin purchased for $12 and $1.50 shipping. The obverse is nice and of good style. The reverse is a little rough and covered with encrustations but everything is there.

$18.00 partially uncleaned. Maybe $19.50 with postage factored in?

If you’re patient, there are good coins to be found for under $30. Here are a few more recent budget purchases (values not including shipping, which was in many cases free or a few dollars):

    Some nice bargains here!

I was pleased with this Campgate for 16 dollars. The big chunky Galerius was 31 (and looks and feels great in hand).
