Back ground. On April 29 I mailed a package to ICG for grading. I mailed it Registered, Insured, Priorty mail. It was misplaced. On May 21 I filed a claim for the insured value $3994.00. The post office first sent a check for $31.64 the approx face value of the coins. I refiled a claim on June 22 and they sent another check for $583 bringing the total to $624.00 the value of the silver in the coins at the time of mailing. I just finished last night a 2nd refiling (Not mailed yet) again asking them with sales, listing etc to pay the full claim. A lot of work getting prior sales etc. I just got a call from ICG that the package was delivered! I am going to step by step write about the whole thing soon. I want to thank everyone on Coin Talk for the help, encouragement and sharing their experiences with me. Everyone gave me some great info which I am now going to pass on to others if they need help. Three of the coins were the 2000 Cherrio cents my kids got out of boxes of Cherrios. I was getting them slabbed to give to them this coming Christmas. I am sure they will like them and bring back some great memories! Thanks Everyone! Darrow
Now you have to repay the insurance. Hopefully they won't be arrogant and request the items that they paid their claim on, since they made payment even though partial the item maybe consider theirs. Good luck
Thanks the best part was the Cherrio cents for my now adult kids. I sent them in to get them in a slab. Later i found out they were selling on Teletrade form $30 up to $170!
From the letter sent from the Post Office to ICG which they read to me they were at a post office in Atlanta Ga
I wrote my conressman a first term gentleman John Garamendi who requested action from the Post Office and General Accounting Office. I will forwrd you a copy of letter received by ICG from Post Master in Atlanta which may help you. Thanks Darrow
I never cashed any checks. I will be returning them if they ask I will say "it's in the mail" (tongue in cheek)
Glad it worked out; what stinks is now you have to return what you've received on the claim don't you?
Go ahead and cash the checks after ICG confirms that they have your submission. Then when the USPS asks for their money back, tell them you mailed the payment "insured" months ago. J/K! Chris
That's frightening and discouraging that the Post Office only wanted to reimburse the metal content of the coins? I guess for true collector coins, keep good records, folks! Glad to hear they were delivered after all. That's the best result.
I remember reading the original thread when the OP posted it back in May... here's a link to those who may have missed it. http://www.cointalk.com/t176241/ There were some interesting follow-up threads also: http://www.cointalk.com/t182120/ http://www.cointalk.com/t186728/ An intriguing saga to say the least.
I am more than happy to. The Post office were never going to pay me for the value. They wanted to pay for the lowest graded coin listed by type. I had cherried 68 type "B" Washington Quarters over the years and got them slabbed for protection. Most in my humble opinion will grade 64+ with a few that I am sure will go "67". So I am more than happy to get them back. Thx DC
Thank You for keeping up on it. One thing after this all happened is the way I will ship coins in the future. I am going to do a write up and submit for printing. It was interesting to have to look up sales, auctions and fixed price lists to really figure the values. That opened my eyes. I had no idea the Cherrio cents have sold for $30-$170 each. And they would not be worth that if it was not for the Cherrio "special" dollar coins that drew attention to the cents. Thanks again! Darrow
