The paper/cardboard Mint Sets of 1947 - 1958 (no Mint Sets in 1950) produced a lot of toned coins. Most were blah toners, some were butt ugly toners, and some were wonderful looking toners. In general coins from the 1956 - 1958 range toned up more nicely than coins from the 1947 - 1953 range. Post a toned coin (or more than one) from a 1947 - 1958 Mint Set. Here are some coins from a 1951 set that are examples of mediocre to ugly toning. I'll post some nicer ones from the set later on in the thread...
Nice toned examples everyone! Well.......I have a couple pretty ones, but I'm going to try out for the BU (Butt Ugly) Contest with this one that is totally terminal! 1956 NGC MS-65:
Nice looking coins LD, GP and BK!!! I also REALLY appreciate your posting of a BU, Trav!!! It's important to show that most coins in mint sets from this era are NOT attractively toned. That's why I posted the coins I did. I'm rather amused/saddened that I started this exact same thread, at the exact same time, on both the PCGS and NGC boards and NO ONE replied to the threads. I guess over there they are so high and mighty they wouldn't consider posting to a thread that started off with a less than attractive coin unless the coin was a send up of some sort (e.g. a "run over" coin, or some ugly thing on eBay, or a PO2 coin). Heaven's forbid that people might do a thread that showed the range of looks of a specific grouping of coins. To me it's important to show what a standard toned Mint Set specimen looks like. On the prettier side, here are three coins from the same 1951 set. Here's a Roosevelt, IMO it's not technically nice enough to be worth slabbing, but I do find it attractive. Here's one of the '51-S Washingtons. I sent it in to PCGS and it came back MS66. Here's the other of the '51-S Franklins. I sent it in to PCGS and it came back MS65FBL.
I went through 300-original US double mint sets from 1947-1958 one afternoon at Dealer Day at the Baltimore show back in March, 2000 and this 1952-S WQ was the finest coin in the group-
OK, I have a few toned Franklins and Washingtons that I think may be mint set toned, but I am not sure.
Another dark one, this was an eBay "bad photo" gamble, but I'm actually pretty happy with it! The slab is scratched beyond repair for my liking, so it might be off to PCGS for a cross-over soon. Purdy bluuues
