Here' s a 1986 rosie i got in circulation today. the coin seems to be an uncentered broard strike I out lined the rims to show you the thickness . The reverse seems a little out but not much. I need some feed back with this tell me what you think. I know the pics are not great sorry. The title is wrong UNCENTERED BROARD STRIKE I MEAN Jazzcoins joe
Appears to be a mis-aligned die. The obv is off but notice the reverse isn't really. One way to tell for sure is, does the coin have a reeded edge? An uncentered broadstrike has no collar so no reeded edge. So how about Jazz, does it hav a reeded edge or not?
I'm not telling you it's a secret. just kidding condor yes it does have a reeded edge. i don't think it's a misaligned die.seems like a broad strike to me , but what kind/ Jazzcoins joe
Yes it appears to be a broadstrike didn't realize there were different types. This website has a pop-up that shows how somw errors were made, just click on the type of error. http://www.studium.com/6/errorcoins.html
The reverse is out some what The reverse is off i outlined it in black to show you the thickness of the rim jazzcoins joe
Hello jazzcoins, Over the years, the error collecting hobby developed a set of definitions for different error coins. I believe that "Broadstruck" or "Broadstrike" are terms that have a definition. By definition, I believe a coin may be broadstruck if it is struck out of the collar. IMO your coin is simply a slightly imperfect uncentered strike. Nothing in the real world is perfectly centered or concentric. This coin is just slightly imperfect. It may not cross the line to become qualified as a collectable striking error. Technically, it is not off center because none of the design elements are missing. Even if it were a Barber dime with denticles, I don't think that any of the denticles would be missing in this case. It is probably not misaligned dies because both the obverse & reverse appear to be uncentered approximately the same amount in the same direction. Therefore the dies are not misaligned very much. By definition, it is not broadstruck because there is reeding which is evidence of being struck in the collar. If the reading is complete, then the coin is just slightly imperfect and simply an uncenterred slightly imperfect coin. However, if the reeding is only partially present, then it may have been struck with the collar improperly positioned & it could be classified as a partial collar strike. There are a couple good books that describe the minting process. One is The Error Coin Encyclopedia by Margolis & Weinberg and and the other is The Guide to Mint Errors by Allan Herbert. There are very specific definitions for errors & detailed descriptions of minting process described in these books. Very best regards, collect89
This is the definition of a uncenterd broadstrike The coin excibits a larger then normal diameter ,however it is not evenly centered like mine ( The uncenterd broadstrike has all of it's coin designs) like mine but shows it off to one side. The definition says nothing about no collar or missing reeded edge. Jazzcoins Joe
Notice the part of the definition that says it is of larger than normal diameter. They are of larger than normal diameter because it is struck without the collar. If it was struck IN the collar the diameter could not be greater than normal. And since a true broadstrike is struck without the collar it will not have a reeded edge because the reeds are created by the collar. Your coin has the reeded edge, so it was struck in the collar, and it will be of normal size, so it CAN'T be a broadstrike centered or uncentered.
jazzcoins, You are being too inventive. You can't have one without the other. Your coin has reeds. It can't be a broadstrike as the collar that gives the coins the reeds put the reeds on your coin. That means this coin could not have been struck without a collar. That means no broadstrike. What you have is a very common example of a very common misaligned die strike. It's worth ten cents. Thanks, Bill
Maybe it's a new species I'm not being to inventive i just have an open mind Just kidding Thanks Bill for the info Jazzcoins joe:hail:
