Possible Struck Through Grease 1886 Indian Head Penny

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by TheSilverpicker, Jul 18, 2012.

  1. Hi everybody, this is my first post, so i hope that I am posting with proper etiquette (correct section, etc). Anyway, I am relatively new to coin collecting as well. I started buying gold and silver coins as bullion, about a year ago, but found myself becoming interested in the numismatic coins as well. Now, here I am, a year later and Im a coin hound!

    Here's the coin in question:
I have an 1886 Indian Head penny in pretty good shape. The indian's face is worn, but the words are not. The only worn parts of the words are the S from the end of "United States" and the A of America. It is most pronounced, however on the 2nd 8 of 1886. Check out the pictures and let me know what you think. Is it an error coin? If so, were there a lot of error coins like this that exist, or is this rare? And finally, the typical question...how much do you think it's worth.

    Thanks a lot! IMG_1328.jpg IMG_1331.jpg

It does look like grease, and that is common. Do you see how the bottom feather points to between the C and A in AMERICA? That means this the Variety #2, the more expensive of the two varieties. I'll say you got maybe around $30 there.

  4. That's awesome! Thank you so much for the quick response! Is that variety just on the 1886 penny or on all indian head pennies?

Just the 1886. The ones before pointed between the IC and the ones after pointed between the CA. They made that decision in the middle of 1886, that's why the two varieties.

  6. Thanks a lot. This example just goes to show the vast amount of learning one must do to become an expert on coin collecting
