I was given this coin and I'd like some advice/opinions on it. I am questioning if this is a real coin or a replica as the gold finish seems to have worn off. The second issue is that the coin was glued to a commemorative plaque at one point and the back of the coin is coated with residue. Should I attempt to clean the coin?

The information I've found on the web indicates that this may be a Royal 8 Escudos from 1714. It's mentioned that some of these "Royals" were made of silver, so I'm wondering if it is in fact an original silver coin which has had some type of gold covering applied to it at a later date.

Front: "PHILIPPVS-V-DEI-G-1714" Crowned arms, value of VIII in field.
Reverse: "HISPANIARVM ET INDIARVM REX" Cross within quadrilobe, angled scepters

I've also included a picture of a similar coin I've found on the web for reference.

Any info, suggestions, advice is welcome!

What you have there is a modern reproduction. Thousands of them have been made and sold in tourist shops, over the internet, and from ads in magazines, primarily to people as a novelty, a curiosity, a keepsake.
