hey guys. i found this penny while coin roll hunting yesterday. the raised edges on the obverse and reverse of this penny are silver instead of brown. when you look on the edge the sides are silver so there is a brown stripe going along the edge. it is most likely that the copper layer was worn off in these areas, exposing the zinc underneath. at first glance i thought it was a penny stamped onto a nickel planchet but it is the same size as a standard penny. any ideas on what this is?
Improper alloy mixture near the edge of the planchet possibly? It is likely just PMD of some sort. -Brian
Yah im tyinking PMD too. Its just really odd how it happened only on the obverse edge and reverse edge. Two perfect circles. Well i guess its not that odd since they are the most raised part but still its nothing ive ever seen lol -ryan
What rickmp is trying to say is that he believes this coin may have gone through a clothe-drying machine causing this unusual damage. -Brian
Coins that get caught in the fins of a commercial dryer. Type in "dryer coin" in the search function at the top of the page and you'll get a few dozen other threads about the same thing.
Your photos are too small for me to be able to see any detail. What date is your coin? Is it a zinc core or bronze cent? If it is a zinc core my guess is that the copper plating is missing along the rims due to PMD.
I enhanced the photo of the obverse on my own (Sorry, I am unable to post it as a comment on this thread), but I believe the date to be either 1995 or 1996, meaning it is a Zinc core cent so you and I are most likely correct about it having PMD. -Brian
Yes, but the program I used to enhance the photo originally does not allow me to save a photo or copy a link.
DARN IT! Off by only a couple of years... I think it's time that I upgrade to a better photo-enhancment program instead of those unreliable free, downloadable ones. :computer:
Haha i know how you feel man. My laptop broke so now i am stuck with a five year old desktop that has more viruses than i can count. They should switch out the hammer in thAt emoticon for an atomic bomb
Haaaa! Atomic bomb...And HEY! What do you have against 5 year-old desktop computers?! I'm running an (at least) 5 year-old Compaq desktop computer with the outdate Windows XP progam. I am sure you don't understand the daily pain I go through...Haha. :goofer:
