Hello! This is my first post here. I was taking a photo of this coin because it is slightly misaligned. When I looked at the photo I noticed obvious doubling under the word Connecticut. I took two more photo's of the coin and tried to change the lighting. Is this possibly a doubled die reverse or machine doubling? Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

    Sorry, but it's machine doubling.

Hey Chris! Thank you! Ugh and to think that I spent almost all day photographing this. Oh well, you live and learn. Thanks again! :)

Once you learn more about the minting process, it will become easier. As a general rule of thumb, if the doubling appears flat and shelf-like, it is machine doubling. This happens because the die has become slightly loose in the retaining collar, the vibration of the machinery causes it to move back and forth rapidly and as it is being retracted, it scrapes across the face of the coin.
