Well I think that Constantius II Siliqua will be my last coin for awhile (minus that Valentinian nummi)
Here are some coins I did not have time to acquire or were to expensive at the moment.

    Magnus Maximus Siliqua
I wasn't sure about coin 1 ( I think it has been clipped) that's why I bought the coin that is my current Avatar instead of it :)
    Coin 1
    AR Magnus Maximus Siliqua
    1.1 grams
    image.jpg
    Coin 2 AR Arcadius Siliqua
    Milan Mint
    image.jpg
    And finally
    AR Valens Siliqua
From the Gussage All Saints Hoard.
    1.77 Grams

If I do buy any of these in the future are there any suggestions or advice?

Ummm, those are coins that you didn't buy?

=> man, I have a long, long, long list of coins that I didn't buy, my cool Mag-Max friend ... basically, every coin that I don't already own (*sigh*)

    ;)

However, those are very cool examples that you've chosen (I'm pretty sure that you'll zero-in on those babies on no time flat!!)

    you rock

    cheers

Those are all nice coins and all worthy of adoption; however, I have to agree with my little brother Steve. You don't want to see all the coins I identified and did not buy or was outbid.

=> you're right (the flan does look a bit wee, eh?) ... man, Doug hates tight-flans (I'd avoid that baby eventhough it is my favourite => I love the eye-appeal ... yah, I'm a sucker for cool toning and wow-factor)

... I'm banking-on the gang decides to "wait" for better/ideal choices (yah, I never listen => I have an entire collection of trigger-happy examples!!)

=> whamm-bamm-bamm!! (hey Bossman, I think you got 'em all?!!)

Don't have experience with these in hand, but looks clipped to me. Edges too sharp, especially obvious around the reverse legend.

MM, i just don't know much about these. i don't think the first coin has been clipped, but i could only tell if it obviously was. depending on the price, i would take any of the three.

after Z's post: oh ok i do see what your talking about on the edge Z.

Coin 1: Too tight of a flan, but OK
Coin 2: Flan crack (to be avoided much like a butt crack); reverse legend unreadable
Coin 3: My favorite both in style and condition.

So one vote for Unclipped and 3 votes for possibly clipped.
The thing that gets me is that the weight is way off from issues I have seen. It's only 1.1 grams, in theory it should be double that weight.
Maybe someone at the mint was having a bad day:)

So this thread is siliquae that one regrets not buying in the past? Okay here's mine. I did submit a written mail bid for it but that day my wife scheduled something for me to do so I was unable to bid live & was blown out of the water with my cheap bid. Still siliquae generally never sell for crazy figures. This one is Constantine III.

I do have one siliquae which is of Valens. This one was bought from a Stack's mail bid sale, 2007, lot 866, at an average price for these. Of course this is a very common coin. Now that I look at the pix: it isn't too bad. I wanted Valens in particular for his role in losing the battle at Hadrianopolis and sealing the fate of the Western Roman Empire. Here the engraver crowded the whole "DN VALENS" on one side of the coin: with obvious results. See below.

I have never bought a coin on EBay which I did not return. It's almost a point of honor anymore. Of course the things that I didn't buy/ lost at auction end up in the hundreds of pieces and are really nice.

As usual, I come late to the party but I agree with your decision to pass on these. You have enough siliquae and there will be enough offered next month that you should not be pushed to compromise. Of the lot, the worst to me is the cracked Milan Arcadius. Coins that look like they may break in half or have been glued back together turn me off even if they have the mint and style I prefer. I'd buy any of these at a price and regret it later. It is a character flaw where I let bargain hunting take over. This was $15 which seems cheap for silver but do I really want it in the collection? Much of the reason I keep it is the painted 33 in the reverse field. Museum surplus?

Unkind to quote part of a thought: I said that you have enough siliquae to buy ones you consider a compromise to your standards. Unless you want an example to show that coins were clipped, unless you want to show how brittle these were or unless you are trying to do a Hunt Brothers corner on the silver market, you can find better uses for your money than siliquae like the ones you showed or that Arcadius of mine.

Doug, what is your opinion of coin 1 being clipped?

Forgive me Doug for some odd reason I did not see the end of your previous post ( I hate computers some times)
Thank you for the encouragement to continue to pursue high grade Siliqua.
    Cheers !!

Jokes typed online without benefit of inflection rarely are obvious. In this case, I consider the chance of the coin being clipped very high and certainly higher than I considered you joking. I believe it is a fair question: How many siliquae are there that would make a 'set'? How many rulers issued them from how many workshops or mints? How many different reverses? How many different bust types? (Are there and left facers?) If you add all these together and get 200 or so, the set could cost less than the complete set of Falling Horsemen (~2200). I do not collect sets and have no interest in having 2200 FH but wanted my 15 mints and still want the remaining mint for my 'set' of huts. What is a reasonable grouping of siliquae without getting down to die identities? Will you have 100 'different' coins? Do most of the really rare rulers also have siliquae or are most of them just gold? Do you have a want list?
