Hope everyone’s having an awesome Fourth of July My father-in-law has had this coin for 50 years or more he’s always thought it was a 1943 copper coin. It’s very worn and it’s hard to tell. I asked a few people what date did they think it was . they all said the last digit looks like a three to them.So I guess my question is what process do we take to make sure that this coin is the real thing? excited To see what everyone has to say! upload_2021-7-4_11-9-53.jpeg upload_2021-7-4_11-9-53.png upload_2021-7-4_11-9-53.jpeg

He does not have a million dollar coin. The last digit was no doubt covered by a grease filled die in that area. More likely it’s an 8 but from your first photo it looks like a 4. You need to have this coin in hand but if you think it is then your mind will play tricks on you to convince you of that.

    Looks like a '42 to me . Either way, no way a '43 .

Agree...looked/looks more of a 4 to me also, even before I saw your post.

My first thought was 1944. Even if it was a 1943...with that much loss of detail it would never be confirmable.

My first thought before I even looked at the photo was "tell your father-in-law not to buy that property on St. Croix". My second thought after looking at the photo was "tell your father-in-law not to buy that new riding mower".

I would expect more rim wear. This coin seems fishy to me.

To me it looks like a 1954.

Good catch! I see that, too.

Edit: On second thought, maybe not. The "1" should begin right of Lincoln's chin and the final digit is close to the rim.

I agree. I can't see the 1 in the date, can't see all the positions at all.

To answer your question, "what process do we take to make sure that this coin is the real thing?" If you have a few bucks, send it in to ANACs for authentication and they will determine if it is real or not, ending your father-in-laws life-long question. Good luck and if you do, please post the results.

There is no way to be certain with all the wear and damage. In your post #9, the part that you may think is the top of the 3 extends above the 4. Compare that to the 3 on the steel cent in post #10. Not the same

The only way it will be worth anything is for it to be authenticated. IMO, you would have better odds of getting rich by taking the money for the shipping and fees, and buying lotto tickets
