I have a 1878 S Morgan dollar I am trying to get a VAM on. The most distinguishable factors I see are... -Broken r in TRUST -Slightly chipped lower left tine of 4th right star There are only four VAM for 1878 S with a broken r and those are: -VAM 2 (may not exist) -VAM 5 -VAM 74 -VAM 74a They all are supposed to have engraved feathers except the VAM 2, and the bottom left feathers of my Morgan are nice and rounded with no additional markings or missing pieces. I don't believe its VAM 5 becuase there is definitely not a doubled eyelid, nose, or chip/lip area. I don't think its VAM 74 because the back of the eye socket is completely smooth and there is no polish line. However, it does have the broken r and broken 4th left star. It is absolutely not VAM 74a because there is no chip in the wreath. So is this a VAM 2 or is it just an abnormal VAM 74 without the polish line? I've included pictures of the eye, right 4th star, left bottom wing, and the chipped r.
Show us an image of the full reverse and obverse of the coin. There are lot's of 1878-S Morgans with the broken R. Check the left side of the wreath for a die break within the leaves just east of IT in UNITED. If it's there, you probably have a VAM-46.
Dang, I see that now. I thought the broken R was a major identifier so it was listed primarily. Also, no discernible chunk taken out of the wreath.
