Greetings all, I recovered this coin from a tidal area, it shows. Despite its condition, it clearly lacks the 500 reis revaluation countermark that I see on every other coin of this type I find in auction records. According to my research this undated issue was minted 1640-1654. Can anyone assist in trying to find record of another one of these in existence that lack the revaluation mark? Many thanks, Herbie. Examples uploaded before coin in question.
Nice find! Congratulations! You should have looked for "joão IV cruzado" (with a "tilde" on the "a" , don't know if you can see it?) Here's some links to threads on portuguese coin forums with pics of some examples: http://www.forum-numismatica.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26688 http://numismatas.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2116 http://www.numismatas.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18012 Jose
Thanks Jose! I appreciate the links provided and now have an image of what appears to be a dug match to mine, dots in cross arms and 4 dots to left of shield without the revaluation stamp. I like this coin more than the Spanish I've recovered as it is a much rarer find, though not at all 'Common' Spanish cobs from this period are found much more frequently than this coin. Btw, it was hiding alongside a piece of iron RR track used as a shipway, perseverance at the site and use of a small coil revealed its presence. HH and best wishes, Herbie.
