    Really hard to say based on those pics but it does appear to have been polished.

    Put on the old buffer wheel, and its value reduced to oblivious bullion I am afraid.

    It is possible to find nice BU and unmessed with early 20th century coins from Portugal though, I know, because I collected them and still have them.

    Do you much about this coin in particular? I have seen it in several shops, in several countries, and VERY often on Ebay. However, Krauser says only 1000 were minted. This sounds utterly inaccurate.

    Try http://moedas.org/ instead. I cannot provide a direct link, so you need to keep on clicking along here:

    Moedas Portuguesas
    --> República - Escudo
    --> Comemorativas
    --> 1914-República

    Note where it says "tiragem 1.000.000"? Sounds like a million to me. ;) The listed price (€150) seems a little high though, compared to what other catalogs say.

    That was the number I assumed when I checked Krauser's error. Thanks for the link ;)

    Indeed if it were only 1.000 pieces, we wouldn't see them flowing from Kingdom Come. The 1910-1920 era of Portuguese coins are a darkside specialty for me, I love the designs, the sizes of the coins, and they are comparatively inexpensive compared to most other W. European coins from that era.

    Do you have the 1918 iron 2 centavos?

    No, I only have a red uncirculated bronze example.
