    Guys,

This coin was handed down, and was poorly stored. it's a good year and mark, and the details are decent. I was thinking between an F12 and a VF20 for grade.

I'm just wondering what you thought of the value since it has that streak through the reverse of the coin.

The coin hasn't been cleaned, it was just poorly stored. Any advice would be great.

I actually like the streak on the reverse. It looks like a spotlight is shining on the eagle.

I would guess the details are higher than VF-20 from what I can see. As to exactly how much higher, I'm not sure. Looks closer to XF than F.

    Eric,

That's easily an XF, maybe even an AU coin actually. Since it's a New Orleans issue the lack of hair detail over Liberty's ear and the weak feathers on the Eagle's breast are typical of weak New Orleans strikes.

That's a valuable key date and appears to be album toned. DO NOT try to clean it yourself, you might want to send it to NCS and have them look it over if there is any foreign material on it.

    Thanks for the advice

Thanks for the advice guys. Submitting it to NCS is a good idea.

I was also thinking that submitting it to ANACS might not be a bad idea in order to get it certified and such. Any thoughts on that?

NCS can always send it through NGC for grading.

    NGC Graded

Yeah, I was checking out NCSCoins.com to see their services, and if they could appropriately clean it up a bit and send it through NGC for grading, I think that would be the way to go.

Do you think NGC would grade it in its current condition?

The intent is to get the most value for this coin if it's sold.

So would that be to sell it raw, NCS with NGC grading, ANACS??

    spit shine??? ;)

Odds are what caused that streak is a piece of tape. So the coin may well need some conservation and NCS may be the way to go - along with a request to have NGC slab it if it is found to be OK.

I dont see damage so I see no need for NCS.

No need for NCS on this one. I think it would grade at least XF40 maybe even 45 with NGC so that would be the way to go if you're looking for the most possible money. Nice coin.

I would put that Dollar at EF-45.

NCS cannot repair damage. They can only remove contaminants from the surface of the coin. And if the coin previously had tape on it - you wouldn't be able to see it in a pic.

But when you see a lighter stripe like that on a coin, the cause most often is a piece of tape that held the coin in a folder.

I see what might be tape residue on the reverse.

Also, this coin is potentially worth over a thousand dollars, $50 or whatever it is making sure it's safely conserved and graded is money well spent.

Also If your looking to sell this coin and get the highest possible value, you should send it to PCGS. IMO PCGS Morgans always seem to realize higher prices, than NGC Morgans.

Thank you all for the great advice. I know it's hard to make these calls with just a picture, but I sincerely appreciate the advice.

I'll let you know what happens with the coin.

Pure acetone soak for several hours and and then distilled water might remove some of the dark toning. I wouldn't dip it as you never know what's under it. NCS might be good as they are better with silver and gold. I am very hesitant with copper when it comes to NCS as having personal bad experience. NCS will remove a lot of the toning but you never know what the toning is hiding like a bunch of hairlines or gashes with such dark toning (thick toning will hide such things). Just my MHO. Acetone won't hurt but check every couple hours until you like what you see. I have heard AFTA brand is 100% pure but I don't know where to get it.
