I shared pictures of this coin back in late December/early January I believe. I got it for Christmas from my wife. It was part of an uncleaned lot that she bought for me. It started out looking promising, but after almost 5 months I think this is the best ole' Probus is gonna get. Still an interesting coin I think. I can't make out what the letter in the center is. It looks more like an "S" to me than anything else. Does anyone know? Probus AE Antoninianus Siscia mint, 278-280 AD Obverse: IMP PROBVS INV AVG, radiate draped bust right Reverse: CONCORD MILIT, Probus and Concordia facing the each other and clasping hands, (something) in lower center Mintmark XXI
Sometimes there is a handful of antoniniani amongst the LRBS. I got a Claudius II, Aurelian, Probus, and Macrianus in one lot of 250 coins. They screwed up and should have pulled out the Macrianus, but oh well, my gain. I should add that the lot included 82 (!!!) fallen horseman types.
Patchy silver like this can look better after it retones a bit lessening the contrast. You could chemically darken it but time will work (in time).
Just for your records. The item in the centre fields is often referred to as cursive digamma. RIC 657 Bust Type C; Alföldi type 26, 179.
I worry about putting anything on my coins (even when they look this bad). Perhaps it will retone by the time FFIVN gets it in my will
