I bought a coin that ended up being polished. What does that do to the value versus an unpolished in the same approximate grade? Thanks
Basically kills it, unfortunately. Polished is much worse than just cleaned, methinks. If it was an "uncirculated" coin, it'll be AU details at best, but polishing usually removes quite a bit of metal, meaning you lose more than luster.
Agreed with the above. Buy yourself a 10x loupe and next time look for obvious cleaning signs, like hairlines!
First, welcome to the neighborhood, John! You may have recourse against the seller. When you bought the coin, do you feel that the coin was misrepresented in any way? Did you purchase it on SleazeBay? How did you pay for it? Chris
If it's polished and the listing did not say it's polished, i would return it. Usually if i buy a coin that turns out to be cleaned or polished or otherwise altered, and it isn't mentioned in the listing, i return it. If the problem was listed and i missed it for some reason, then i'm stuck with the coin and consider it a lesson learned.
Ebay is a mixed bag. Buying from them is always a gamble. It's more of a 'sellers' paradise these days.
What he said! John, I don't know how much experience you have buying coins from photos, but SleazeBay is not the best place you would want to frequent for honest sellers. Chris
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Until your experienced, I wouldn't buy any ungraded coins on eBay. Like the others said, a polished coin kills the value. IMO, a polished coins is worse than a harshly cleaned coin. Technically, if a coin gets a details grade, then it's "ungradeable".
