    Sadly, to say, PMD. "Blunt force trauma" to the "old gal" I'm afraid.

    That crack or lamination looks as if it extends into the background. How'd that happen?

    To me, this one is something of an anomaly. I know that the mint struggled with the nickel composition when they introduced it, so based on that I am open to possibility of there being a problem from the mint.... However, based on what I see, this coin has been bent and/or mutilated in some fashion as well, so I am more inclined to lean towards a bent coin that cracked when somebody tried to make it flat again.

    Wouldnt the design elements on the other side be flattened and distorted from whatever the coin was laying on when struck or hit. Instead it kept its detail and bent.

    So i am thinking heat maybe from a torch tryung to mend the crack.

    Planchet had a lamination. Then damaged sometime after in circulation.
