Ok, I am pretty sure this is PMD of some sort. But I am gonna ask for confirmation here, and also ask what could have done this? There are NO other marks on the coin anywhere, no plier marks, no excessive scratches, not bent, no gouges, nothing but this. And I really don't wanna hear the words "hammer job", because that's simply incorrect... lol. I know what those look like, and this ain't that It's something different, new to me, and apparently more involved/sophisticated. I am pretty sure I have identified the letters you can see on it as the "GO" and "RU" from the motto on the front of a quarter... check this out, front/back/edge:
Actually, while I have you here, and we're on the subject, here is another oddity I have come across - please tell me how someone managed to remove this letter? To me, at least, it seems apparent it was removed from the coin purposefully, and there is nothing else wrong with it:
Thank you for your reply. Do you have any idea how the damage was accomplished, to look like that? That's the main question I have
The first one is PMD because you can see that the reeding was fully intact before the damage occurred. The second one appears to be polished down. The missing D area is discolored so I say it has been tampered with.
