So.. This seller has this listed as a Mint Error on ebay.. The only problem is that it is not a Mint Error. Seller also includes the label from NGC that clearly states that the Quarter in question is Damage or Alteration.. Big Time Fail! Enjoy!
Funny, yes, but it would have been a bigger fail had they not presented independent evidence disputing their claim. However, if we look closely at NGC’s tag it clearly states “MINT ERROR” and is something that could easily be misinterpreted by the uninitiated. All things considered it’s probably safe to say this person (or at least the submitter) falls solidly into this category.
@BooksB4Coins True! as you answered I was typing this.. I think that NGC has to be a bit clearer in what they are trying to explain on the label they provided.
Similar problem to what they had back in the days before they did Details grading. People would post bodybaged circulated coins on ebay claiming that NGC certified them as Mint State because they had MS on the bodybag label. the MS on the label indicated they were business strikes and not proofs, not that they were Mint State. NGC does that, labels them as MS or PF up until the time the actual grade is determined.
