I see there is a 1972-S cent DDO that looks similar to this one, but I cannot confirm. There does appear to be strong MD, but on the letters and numbers, there appears to to be, well, I don't know. I attached the best photos I can showing the details of the coin. It may all be MD, but I wanted to get a second option first. Also, VV says the coin is re-engraved/re-punched. What is that? How can you tell? Thanks
Sorry, not this time. The doubling is very flat, especially on the date and mintmark, indicating that this is die deterioration or Machine Doubling like Paddy54 said. (he's pretty smart)
Your coin is "strike doubled." It is also covered with green PVC residue and tiny blobs. I has no value other than a cent; however, it is a very nice example of this characteristic so I would keep it.
Better terminology would be strike doubling. Doubled should be used only when it's a true Doubled Die variety. IMO
Worn die, as already mentioned by others. With the fast paced minting they are doing, the dies wear quickly, allowing some material to spread beyond the original design.
