I was not expecting to win this, but he had the wrong picture in the eBay listing (right picture in the listing), so I took a shot. I got it for $360. Unless I am missing something, it has a shot a AU, but may well have been cleaned. Any opinions welcome - PLEASE!! Sorry, but the only pictures I have are from the listing. Hopefully, I will have some better ones soon.
Looks like a good deal to me. I'd give it at least an AU55. Very nice Lincoln. As for being cleaned, I really cant tell.
Nice coin! I can see it grading AU but the carbon spots is what holds it back from getting that IMHO. Those little black dots all over the front is carbon spots and depending on what they look like in person they could get bigger. I try to make it a habbit not to buy copper coins with carbon spots but sometimes it is hard to find one without them. Any AU/MS coin has the chance of having, or getting carbon spots if not taken care of. That being said---I think it is a nice looking coin that may not look bad in person...I'm not sure about a cleaning... Speedy
The coin is a Nice 14 D. I would grade it AU. The Carbon spot's are there but a 14 D......360.00...... Congrat's. Rhubarb
WOW, nice buy !!! I say AU details easily, can't tell the original color from the pics tho, please post new pics when it arrives. With AU bid @ $1150, I'd say you did fantastic !!!!! XF bid is $750
You did good!!! :thumb: Very nice buy. Don't think it's been cleaned. But still getting a 14 D in that grade for $360, is awesome. Nice coin, and awesome buy! :thumb: Phoenix
Please explain? I am interested in the altered date therory. MM misplaced....The entire lincoln series are composed from a Hub. The Hub makes the Dies. The worker punched the MM in the Die not alway's in the same spot as the last one and not alway's just once maybe twice maybe he even dropped the letter. Now your into Varieties and OMM's. The Die makes the coin. Rhubarb
that is a very nice buy. i would spend $360 on it in a heartbeat. i think it looks real and not cleaned. nice buy!
If this was an altered date the "9" and the "1" would be further apart, like this.....19 14. This coin shows absolutely no indication of having the date or mint mark altered. I'd be interested in knowing how you came to that conclusion.
I have to agree - it looks like an altered date. But not the normally altered date. Take a close look at the second 1 - it is smaller than the first 1 and it has a rather unusual curve on the bottom right.
I see what your looking at. Could the coin have been hit at one time? Could it be minor notching or could be Die Fatigue. I post this picture of another 1914 D for comparison. RLM has a nice looking coin, perhap's the only way to know is to send it off and have it graded. Rhubarb
If there is any doubt, I will return it. He does have a 14 day refund policy. And I have 2 knowledgeable dealers here to check it.
I disagree with altered date theory, which would also have to have the VDB shaved off the bust shoulder, and it appears to me to be original, at least in this pic.
Here is a known genuine...I cracked it out of an ICG holder for my XF/AU set. It is graded AU-50. Look at the date / mm relationship. Also, the second 1 position relative to the 9 and 4.
