Hello there everyone, coin talk was brought to my attention by a member of your community here that helped me on a coin I had purchased on ebay and had warned me of a fake. He had mentioned to me that the members on here are a helpful group and willing to share info I have spent a few days looking over the forums and I think they are great. Can you guys take a look at a coin for me that I am considering purchasing and give your thoughts. Here is the item # it is listed on ebay 150327560957 thank you for your time
Not my area, but here is a link to your auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...7560957+% 26_sacat=See-All-Categories&_fvi=1 BTW, welcome to CT.
Welcome to CT! From those photos I see nothing that jumps out at me as fake. The seller said that he thinks it has been wiped at some time...so I would hope it would sell for alittle less... If you don't mind a lower grade trade dollar there is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1877-P-TRADE-DO...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:50 It goes off here shortly, and is graded by PCGS.
Thank you guys for looking. I looked at that other one that is graded but I like them in the higher grades other then that I would have looked at that one first. The seller is working with me a little on the price so I feel he is being fair. Does anyone else have anymore thoughts on this coin?
I'm not an expert in trade dollars but I have been buying coins on ebay for several years. Considering the seller has a 100% approval rating with over 2,700 transactions suggests to me that he is a respectable guy. I hope this helps.
If that seller is who I think it is, you have nothing to worry about. Problem is, I don't know for certain if it is him or not. Could just be someone that "borrowed" his name.
Here's a link to a genuine example. http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dollars/trade_dollars/1874_Trade_Dollar_Obverse.jpg The two look pretty much the same. Since he guarantees it to be genuine I assume you could get your money back if it proves to be a fake. That price is probably at the top of the list. It's not out of line but $200 might be a bit more realistic, given its condition.
Nothing jumps out at me on this one. The characteristics of alot of these fakes will be lost detail in the wheat stalks and gown of liberty below the knee. These are low relief areas and seem to have a problem getting details on them in the counterfeits. Who knows tho', they are getting better. Looks good to me tho'. JMO
The coin looks real, but has been overdipped/cleaned. That said, the vast majority of these coins have been mistreated, but personally, I'd wait for a more original/appealing example. Respectively...Mike p.s. if the seller says the coin's been wiped and has hairlines, you can bet your bottom dollar they are much worse in-hand.
Hey thank you all for your thoughts you all are a really a big help and I feel like it will be a great asset to me to be part of this group I am happy I decided to sign up and hope that I can contribute something back. I am going to take a little from everyone here and I am going to pass on this one. I think for the price that is being offered to me I can wait and pick up a graded one for around the same or a little more money but I think it is worth the wait and the little extra money. Thanks again and I look foward to being part of this group of people who have a love and passion for collecting coins!
