A friend of mine heard I collected coins and she told her dad. Well, he one day handed me this and said he heard I collected coins and thought I might like it for my collection. Nothing big, 1879 S, but when I was looking it over I saw doubling on the W in we. I thought "Wow" Well I felt bad that he gave it to me from his own collection, so I thought that the right thing to do would be to give it back. Even if it is worth litle or a lot, it personally to me wouldn't seem right to keep it if he didn't know about it. But he told me to keep it. He didn't give it to me for me to give it back to him. So now this whole time (since Oct.) I've been trying to get info on it. Nothing I could find on the internet helped. When I took it to my coin dealer he gave me a look like this kid is dreaming. When he looked at it he said "Hey, it looks like there is some doubling there!" You guys are my only hope now. Is it doubling, or should I cancel my plans on going to Yale? (lol) Thanks ahead of time. Oh BTW, what is that one the wing? Thanks.

I don't see the doubling, but I do see a Chinese chopmark, meaning the coin circulated in the Far East at some point. It used to be that chopmarks were considered damage, reducing the value of the coin. Nowadays a chopped coin frequently sells for as much as an unchopped one, but very seldom do they rate a premium.

I see the area that you are talking about, but it looks like damage to me.
Shouldn't chopmarks be clear shapes? Even if I/we cannot understand the characters, the ones that I have seen are not mushed like this one?
    Just asking, still learning.

I agree Other Frank....definately damage. I see what you are talking about Phoenix but I don't think that is doubling. I think it may be from normal wear. But I am definately not expert.

Perhaps you should take better photos beforehand. It's quite difficult to judge from a single picture like this. If you have a modern digital camera that you bought about 3 years or so, there should be a macro zoom usually denoted as flower sign on your camera.

I strongly suggest that you play around with that. Or else it's quite difficult to judge from that picture.

It is Damage and not a chop mark. I dont see any doubling that would add to the value of the coin.

After blowing the picture up quite a bit, I have to agree. [IMG]

    Hi,
Both, I would have to see a closer picture of the W as there are some that exhibit doubling on the Motto, It would not be on just the W though. It is probably a form of mechanical doubling. Still without a closeup pic of the W you cant be sure.

    Have Fun,
    Bill
