It is probably a medal. Is there anything on the other side?

The US Mint produced an 11-medal set called "America's First Medals", but this design isn't one of them. It's possible that this was produced by one of the private mints like Franklin or Danbury probably around the time of the Bicentennial in 1975. Look on the edge to see if there is a hallmark.

Wow! It's pretty beaten up (or is that damage part of the design?) Whatever value it had is gone now. Was this a metal detecting find?

Value (unless it's silver but it doesn't look like it) might be about $1 or so. It's got a lot of damage so it would just be a filler for a collector.

This is one of Dondero's older bronze medallions. In that condition there is no real value, but it's nice have anyway.

    $200 is an expensive lesson.
