I dug this yesterday and am having a hard time identifying it. Would any of you experts be able to help me?
Hello joeyfresh, I don't recognize the host coin & cannot tell you if it is real or a reproduction. Please be patient & give some of the experts at CT have a chance to see your find. Welcome to CoinTalk. :welcome: Are you a metal detectorist? Don't clean the piece. Are you familiar with the old pillar dollars & how they were cut to make change? The whole coin was 8 reales. The coin could be cut into any number of pieces but eight made sense. Two of the eights was called 2-bits or a quarter coin (like your example). I don't know if your piece is real or a reproduction. It looks suspect to my amateur eyes.
Some kind of a size indication would be helpful as well. As would straight on shots and with the coin in the proper orientation. (The second image looks like that might be the lower left quadrant of the shield of a coat of arms.
2 bits ? usually cut from an 8 reals coin. the experts will let you know what else it might be. cool find.
Thank you all for your replies. I do detect often and found a few cobs and cut pieces of milled reals over the years. This coin is definitely not Spanish but I'm not sure what it is which is why I posted it here. I have a blog of some of my finds which also has more pictures of this coin but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link my blog here especially since I only have a couple of posts.
From the lettering it maybe a 8 Reale Postosi mint circa 1600. I need better pictures or it in hand to make a call.
I believe this is a 6 Stuiver from Netherlands-Kampen, KM#77. http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/WorldCoinPrices.aspx?category=28944&worldcoinid=87155 Not a great picture: http://www.vcoins.com/fr/stores/coi...silver_6_stuivers_1691_vg/328871/Default.aspx
Thanks Paddy. Here are some more pictures. I had ruled out Spanish but I'm no expert so if you feel it is then I may have to take your word for it
Yes I do agree from the fresher pictures the image looks to be a stuiver.....as the lettering is closer to that on the stuiver than the reale. plus that comma shaped mark next to the shield. Plus the time period and being silver would of been cut to make change for a purchase.
