This was from a group of 10 unsearched coins I bought a year ago. All 10 looked like total blanks when I received them. This one in question was the only one that looked like something might be under the very hard black crusted surface. I finally decided to break away the crust. From the limited search I have done it looks like late Roman but I have not seen one that matches it. Granted there is not much left and based on the condition I doubt it's worth much. As this is my first coin, and I would like to get my six year old son involved in collecting, it would be great to identify it. The coin is about 20mm at its widest point and I believe it is bronze.
Old Roman coin "Very intresting to say the least" is almost exactly what two others have told me. 1. Makes me wish I had known what I was doing before I started cleaning it. 2. Makes me more anxious about what others will think of it when trying to identify it. I have just found a great guide to cleaning ancient coins so hopefully I will do no harm moving forward... Have a happy Thanksgiving! :eat: Darryl
Definitely Valentinian (DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG is the legend) but as for the strike error,I've never seen one like that. The mintmark looks like it might be mirror image reversed!..pretty cool! Your reverse is a RESITITVTOR REIPVBLICAE or possibly SECVRITAS REPVBLICAE but the portrait from the obverse seems to be struck over the full figure image of the emperor or deity that would normally be there.
Thanks Mikjo0. Nice to know with one of my first coins I found something a little different. Best Regards Darryl
